Do you want to know about financial ties your doctor may have with drug and medical device companies?

Sunshine Act surveyA new federal law requires that financial relationships between doctors and pharmaceutical (drug) or medical device companies be shared with the public on a government website.

Anyone will be able to use this website to see if their doctor has received such payments or other transfers of value.

This law is officially called the “National Physician Payment Transparency Program” or “Open Payments.” It is part of the Affordable Care Act. It is most often referred to as the “Sunshine Act.”

The information on the public website will include payments for work and research that has led to the discovery, design, and development of new drugs, life-saving devices, and innovative healthcare. The website will also include information about gifts, meals, speaking fees, and travel support.

The information is intended to aid you in making judgments about which, if any, of those payments and other things are problematic. The purpose of the website is to allow you to make informed choices.

Researchers at the University of Michigan are conducting a survey to find out if patients and their family members have concerns about payments and other items of value that their doctors may receive from pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Click on this link if you would like to share your opinion about these issues.

The survey will close on September 30, 2014.
