The University of Michigan Health System’s patient room service program is all about creating the ideal patient care experience — and that’s making a lot of people happy. Joyce Kerestes, director of Patient Food and Nutrition Services, answers a few questions about the program.
Q. Is the room service system-wide?
Q. What’s behind the service?
A. The goal is to offer our patients fresher food choices prepared to order. For example, we’re able to prepare salads or deli sandwiches the way a patient requests, similar to a restaurant operation. We conducted surveys and focus groups to find out what patients desired and incorporated many of the suggestions into our program.
Q. What has been the reaction?
A. The new service is getting very positive feedback from patients and their families, as well as from care providers.
Q. How does the service work?
A. Patients can now order what they want, when they want it. Those in University Hospital and CVC are able to order 24/7. A big benefit is that patients no longer have to select their food the day before, when they don’t really know what they’ll be hungry for the next day.
Q. What types of items are on the menu?
A. The menu features seasonal foods and chef’s specials, including entrées such as Michigan Cherry Chicken Salad for the summer and a Harvest Beef Stew for the fall. Patient favorites include:
- Seasonal fresh fruit
- Made-to-order omelets (made with eggbeaters upon request)
- Caesar salad with chicken or salmon
- Potato-encrusted cod
- Asian stir-fry
- Stuffed baked potato (made to order)
- Chicken Parmesan with penne pasta
- Homemade meatloaf
- Four flavors of milkshakes
- Yogurt and fresh fruit parfaits with granola
Q. Is room service included in the room patient’s charge?
A. Yes, room service is included in the patient room charge. Guest trays are also available for family members and friends for a nominal fee.
