The heart is a miraculous muscle. It does more work than any other muscle in your body, continuing a steady beat as it pumps blood to all of your organs, minute after minute, day after day. But how much do you really know about your heart?

Eight is golden for Cindy and Ken Tobin

In recognition of Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month, we’re bringing you love stories about members of our Cardiovascular team, including how they met and fell in love. We think you’ll enjoy getting to know the couples among our faculty and staff!

Ken and Cindy Tobin

Cindy and Ken Tobin have a lot on their personal and professional plates, but you won’t hear them complain. The couple, married for nine years, have managed to merge two busy families and two challenging careers with amazing ease.

The two met while practicing medicine at William Beaumont Hospital in 2002. Cindy was a nurse practitioner in cardiac surgery and Ken was part of a private group out of Birmingham, Mich., specializing in non-invasive cardiology. Born and raised in northern California, Ken came to Michigan to do his internal medicine residency at Botsford Hospital, followed by a cardiology fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital. Jennifer and Matthew Romano — A one-of-a-kind couple

Drs. Matthew and Jennifer Romano

As a couple, Jennifer Romano and Matthew Romano are close to a match made in heaven. This realization came nearly 10 years after the two first met at the University of Michigan, where they were both doing research during their general surgery residencies.

Matthew, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, and Jennifer, a Michigan native, were acquaintances during that time, but didn’t stay in touch when Matthew went back to California to finish his residency. It wasn’t until he returned to U-M for adult cardiac surgery training that the two became friends. Continue reading

Claire Duvernoy and Frank Bogun — The language of love

Claire Duvernoy, Frank Bogun and their children, Max and Lulu

Claire Duvernoy and Frank Bogun remember the exact day they met. They were at the University of Michigan Hospital in a busy afternoon clinic at Taubman Center — she as a second year cardiology fellow and he as a newly arrived advanced cardiac electrophysiology fellow.

It was Frank’s German characteristics (tall, slender build and wire-rim glasses) that made him stand out in the crowd for Claire, whose parents were from Swabia, a small southern region of Germany. Claire had also lived in Germany for a few years as a young child, where her father served in the United States Army after her parents became U.S. citizens. Back in the United States, Claire remembers speaking mostly Swabian — the regional dialect — in her home growing up. Continue reading
