Learn about nutrition with carnations and color!

A fun way to teach kids about how our body uses the nutrients we give it is with a simple experiment involving carnations and food coloring.

You’ll need several white carnations (as many as you’d like to experiment with), food coloring, water and a few vases.

The experiment

Fill the vases up about a quarter of the way with water. Add about 10 to 20 drops of food coloring and stir it into the water. Cut off about an inch from the bottom of the stem of the carnation and place it in the vase. Now we wait. You can fill several different vases with different coloring if you’d like.

Every few hours, check back on the carnation to see if anything has changed. You might want to have your child keep a small notebook of observations.

It’s (sports) physical time

What parents should know about sports physicalsAll high school and middle school athletes in the state of Michigan are required to have a sports physical each year. While some schools and organizations offer mass sports physical events, a sports physical is something that is easily incorporated into your child’s annual checkup with his or her healthcare provider. Seeing the same healthcare provider annually creates a sense of continuity and allows you, your child and your healthcare provider to develop a strong relationship.

The C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health recently conducted a national survey on parents’ thoughts about sports physicals. The poll found that the vast majority, 74 percent, of children get their physical from their regular healthcare provider and 90 percent agreed that a sports physical is not a substitute for regular check-ups.

Getting serious about getting back to school

Tips for helping your family tackle “back to school” with ease, from pediatrician Stephanie Goodson

Last night, as I negotiated the terms of bedtime with my fourth grader (who has managed to push his bedtime back by almost an hour and a half over the course of the summer) I had a moment of panic when I realized the school year, and the early mornings that accompany it, were almost upon us. 

No longer will I be able to give into his pleas for one more TV show, book or snuggle session. Unless I was prepared to handle the crankiness of a sleep-deprived kid come the first week of school, I was going to have to get serious.

Unfortunately, it’s time to face the facts. Summer is winding down and it’s time to prepare our kids for the beginning of the school year. 

As a pediatrician, I know that preparation is key for making sure kids start the school year right, but just like any mom, I, too, struggle to make sure both me and my three kids have all the tools needed to tackle the school year with ease. 

I thought I would share some tips that make it easier for my family to snap into the school-year mindset.
