When it comes to making decisions, the sad truth is it may seem easier for parents to choose a car seat, a refrigerator, even a house – than it is to feel like they’re making an informed decision about where to seek health care.
Making a decision about a hospital to literally entrust with your child’s heart can feel especially intimidating.
That’s why we’re particularly proud of having been awarded the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ highest designation for pediatric heart surgery programs – the prestigious 3-star rating.
What does the 3-star designation mean?
In a nutshell, the 3-star distinction says that children who undergo heart surgery at Mott receive outstanding clinical care. The determination of which hospitals receive the 3-star rating is based purely on hard evidence and data regarding patient survival and complications. Only 6 of the 113 children’s hospitals in the country were awarded this designation.
What’s different about this designation?
Many awards and reviews you can find online factor in subjective information that is hard to compare across hospitals of different sizes and types. In some cases, they’re bestowed by organizations without deep familiarity with the complexity of pediatric heart care.
This award, in comparison, is awarded by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), a nonprofit organization representing more than 6,000 cardiac surgeons, researchers and healthcare professionals worldwide. Their comprehensive star rating system allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. In the current analysis of national data, the cardiac surgery performance of our hospital was found to lie in the highest quality tier.
Not only is the designation granted by specialists in our field, but it’s based exclusively on an evaluation of outcomes and quality data.
We are honored to receive the 3-star designation, and we’ll continue to earn it every day, for each and every one of the Little Victors we care for.
